My scratch-built early Klingon cruiser
By Sean Farrell

When I first heard about Star Trek: Enterprise way back in 2001, I was fascinated by the concept of an early, pre-Kirk era of Starfleet. Before the show even aired, I decided to build what I thought an early 22nd century Klingon vessel would look like--instead of the classic D-7, this would be a D-6, or even a D-5 Class.

The main engine body was taken from a plastic bottle that once held antacid pills. The neck was the transmission from a 1/48 jet aircraft that I never got around to finishing. Those two aspects of the ship were easy. But I had to completely scratch-build the engines, the forward command deck, as well as the thingy that sits on top of the engine section (I was still following the basic design of the Klingon ship, only trying to imagine what a retro version would look like.

I scratch-built the forward deck on top of a half plastic sphere from Plastruct. The superstructure is a mixture of various Plastruct and Evergreen pieces. I also used some parts from my spare parts box here. The engines and the thingy on top of the engine section (don't know what that's called) are also all scratch-built from plastic parts from Plastruct. The impulse emitter is from the cap off of a deoderant package. I figured this should be really big, since this is an early version of the ship. The thing looks goofy, but I like it. While easily outclassed in Kirk's time, this vessel was probably a ship to be feared back in its day.
