The U.S.S. Enterprise

By Sean Farrell

I finally built something straight out of the box...well, almost.

I built the new Polar Lights Enterprise straight out of the box as Captain Kirk's vessel during his original five year mission. But I wasn't crazy with the stand that came with the kit, so I built my own. I used a sheet of balsa wood with a plastic tube. I painted it black, which makes it easy to shoot special effect scenes.

I always wanted to do the effects shot that I saw in the Classic Trek episode "Who Mourns For Adonais?" An alien claiming to be the god Apollo literally seized the Enterprise while in space. I'll never forget the scene of a giant hand holding the mighty starship in place. This image was burned into my mind as a kid, and I was eager to re-create it using the PL model. That's my hand, holding the model. I completed the illusion in Corel by blackening out the rest of the picture and adding stars.

The Polar Lights Enterprise model takes its place between my other starship models on top of a bookcase. The 22nd Century First Warp Drive vessel is to your right, while the 24th century Enterprise-E, Captain Picard's ship, is to the left of the PL Enterprise. I like how this looks; it sort of reminds me of a mini-Smithsonian Museum devoted to space flight.
